Pakistan PM intervenes to fix sugar price
Pakistani prime minister Yousuf Raza Gilani has fixed the ex-mill price of sugar at Rs. 45/kg inclusive of all taxes for the period of three months starting from first of Ramadan throughout the country, while General Sales Tax on sugar has been reduced by 50 percent during this period.
The Prime Minister has directed the Minister of Industries to ensure the availability of subsidized sugar at the rate of Rs. 38 per kg at all Utility Store outlets throughout the country. He further directed that the support of provincial governments would be sought for devising an effective monitoring mechanism.
The meeting decided that there will be no restriction on the inter-provincial movement of sugar and wheat. It was also decided that meeting of the four Chief Ministers will be held to chalk out a long-term strategy for determining sugar prices within the next fortnight.
